Telehealth services
We now offer Telehealth services in addition to our in-clinic services and each family can choose which platform is best for them.

We provide thorough, individualized evaluations to identify areas where your child may benefit from speech and occupational therapy. Our team uses a variety of assessment tools and methods to gain a comprehensive understanding of your child’s communication skills.

Speech Evaluations:
  • Articulation/Phonology: We assess how clearly a child produces sounds and words. This includes examining speech patterns and identifying any speech sound errors that may impact intelligibility.
  • Fluency: We evaluate fluency issues such as stuttering or any disruptions in speech flow, focusing on potential causes and strategies for improvement.
  • Voice: This assessment focuses on the quality of the voice, such as loudness, pitch, resonance, and vocal quality. Any abnormalities in these areas can indicate issues that may affect the clarity and effectiveness of communication.
Language Evaluations:
  • Receptive Language: We assess how well a child understands spoken language. This includes evaluating their ability to follow directions, comprehend vocabulary, and answer questions appropriately.
  • Expressive Language: We look at how effectively a child communicates their thoughts and ideas. This involves assessing their use of vocabulary, sentence structure, and grammar.
  • Pragmatics: This focuses on social communication skills. We examine how children use language in different social settings, including interpreting non-verbal cues, maintaining conversations, and solving problems during interactions.
What are speech therapies?

Speech Therapy is a health profession that falls under the area of Human Communication Sciences. Speech therapy, is the diagnosis, management and treatment of individuals who are unable to communicate effectively or who have difficulty with feeding and swallowing. Speech Language Pathologists (SLPs) assess speech, language, cognitive-communication, and oral/ feeding/ swallowing skills to identify types of communication problems (articulation, fluency, voice, receptive and expressive language disorders) and the best way to treat them.

Who needs speech therapy?

Screenings are abbreviated evaluations to determine if a child could benefit from further evaluation or if a child’s level of performance is age appropriate and no further evaluation is needed. If your child is found to have mild difficulties yet a full evaluation is not recommended, home programming ideas will be discussed so parents can facilitate these skills at home. If an area of concern is identified, a full evaluation will be recommended.

What do they do at speech therapy?

Parents are often invited into the treatment rooms to observe therapy if the situation is appropriate, and parent education is an integral part of every therapy session. Each session is designed to allow time for the parent and therapist to discuss progress and what was done during the therapy session. Home programs are provided to the parent to increase carryover in all settings and help the child be more successful in reaching their goals.

When is the therapy needed?

An evaluation allows a speech therapist the opportunity to assess your child’s development. This assessment may include a standardized test, observation through play, medical history information, and/or parent report. In most cases, it includes all four. Through the evaluation, it will be determined if treatment is necessary. Treatment cannot be initiated unless an evaluation has been completed.

Pediatrician
Mariela at Skills Therapy is amazing at what she does. In just two sessions my daughter was signing words, at 1 month she was making animal sounds and saying one letter words, a year later she is able to fully communicate with some sentences.
